EORI number update France: New customs rule effective from May 31
Starting May 31, 2025, a new customs regulation will come into effect in France, impacting all importers. French clients of carriers will be required to have an EORI number registered with their SIREN number. Without this, customs clearance will not be possible.
What’s changing with the EORI number update in France?
Until now, it was common to register an EORI number based on the SIRET number. As of the end of May, however, only EORI numbers linked to the SIREN number will be accepted — the official company identifier in France.
Imports will be blocked if clients fail to update their registration in time. Goods may be seized, delayed, or require temporary storage until the correct documentation is provided.
Who is responsible for this update?
Updating the EORI number lies with your French clients, as they are the official importers. However, as a carrier or freight forwarder, it is in your interest to proactively inform your clients and ensure they are aware of this change.
By doing so, you can:
- Prevent delays at customs
- Protect your operations from unnecessary waiting times or costs
- Demonstrate added value as a logistics partner
If needed, you can also assist your clients with the process by:
- Sharing the official customs link
- Providing a checklist of required documents
- Offering basic guidance on the steps
What are the risks for carriers?
If your clients don’t comply with this new requirement, you could face serious operational issues:
- Seizure or delay of goods at French customs
- Unexpected storage and demurrage fees
- Long waiting times at ports
- Searching for alternative customs warehouses
To avoid disruptions, we recommend informing your French clients as soon as possible and confirming that they are already working on this update.
How can clients update their EORI number?
French importers must complete the update via the official French customs portal. The processing time is up to 5 business days, so it’s best to act quickly.

Step-by-step guide:
- Go to French Customs portal SOPRANO/EORI: https://www.douane.gouv.fr
- Select “Request or update an EORI number”
- Fill in the form using the SIREN number (9 digits)
- Attach required documents (company registration certificate, ID of legal representative, etc.)
- Submit the request
Once approved, they will receive a new EORI number in the format: FR + SIREN + 000.
Applies to imports now, exports later
This requirement currently applies only to imports into France, but French customs authorities have already announced that the same rule will apply to exports by the end of 2025.
What should carriers do?
- Inform your French clients about the new obligation
- Confirm that they are aware and have started the process
- If needed, assist them with documentation or direct them to the official website
- Monitor shipments planned for delivery in France after May 31, to confirm all requirements are met.
Summary
The update to EORI number registration is significant and requires timely action. As a carrier, you should take preventive steps now to avoid delays, added costs, and potential customs issues. Without the updated EORI number, your clients will not be able to import goods into France after May 31.
